By latter 1800s JOKER added by U.S. cardmakers. Heretofore large cards would become two STANDARD SIZES, Poker and Bridge size. For centuries, cards manufactured by stenciling, woodblock, then copperplate printing. With 1800s new lithographic printing, images on (until now blank) card BACKS became standard. (Of course, setting the stage for wider interests in card collecting.)
