Through 1800s evolving English pattern made player hands easier to hold and view. -CORNERS rounded; -COURTS double-ended; -Corner INDICES added – the better to hold hands ‘close to the vest.’

For centuries, cards manufactured by stenciling, woodblock, then copperplate printing. With 1800s’ new lithographic printing, images on (until now blank) card BACKS became standard. (Of course, setting the stage for wider interests in card collecting.)
